Phosphor Bronzes, or tin bronzes, are alloys containing copper, tin and phosphorous. The phosphor bronzes contain between 0.5 and 11% tin and 0.01 to 0.35 % phosphorous. The addition of tin increases the corrosion resistance and strength of the alloy. The phosphorous increases the wear resistance and stiffness of the alloy.
With a high machinability rating of 80, C54400 phosphor bronze can be bent, formed, stamped, or blanked. It has a very high strength and toughness as well as low coefficient of friction and fine grain. C54400 phosphor bronze is resistant to wear, fatigue, and chemical corrosion. It is used as electrical connectors and partially due to its excellent machinability finds use as bushings, gears, pinions, screw machine products, thrust washers, valve parts, and shafts.
